Case-specific supervision

Sometimes you need focused support on a particular case, client presentation, or area of practice that’s outside your usual experience. Case-specific supervision offers expert guidance when you’re working at the edge of your competence – or want to develop new competence altogether.

I offer case-specific supervision in areas where I have specialised training and extensive practice experience, providing targeted support to help you work safely, ethically, and effectively with complex presentations.

Who this is for

Individual practitioners

Individual practitioners seeking support on specific cases or wanting to develop new areas of competence

Organisations

Organisations wanting focused supervision for staff working with particular client groups or in specialised settings (can be delivered as group supervision)

My areas of expertise

I offer case-specific supervision in:

Outdoor therapy

Working therapeutically in natural settings, from walk-and-talk therapy to fully outdoor-based practice. I’ve been integrating outdoor work into my counselling and somatic therapy since 2020 and have trained extensively in wilderness therapy and ecosomatics.

Substance and alcohol use

Supporting clients navigating problematic substance and alcohol use, recovery, harm reduction, and the complex relationship with substances.

Working in prisons

The unique challenges of therapeutic work in custodial settings include managing boundaries, navigating institutional constraints, holding hope in difficult environments and reframing safety when imprisoned.

Voice hearing

Working with people who hear voices, from a perspective that honours their experience without pathologising. Exploring what voices mean to the person and how to work collaboratively with their experience.

Dissociative processes

Understanding and working with dissociation and/or fragmentation, whether trauma-related or part of someone’s broader experience of self.

About my training and experience

My expertise in these areas is grounded in both specialised training and extensive frontline practice:

Outdoor therapy

Wilderness Therapy training (2021, 2023) and Ecosomatics training (2022). I’ve worked as an associate outdoor therapist for a national organisation (The Wilderness Foundation) since 2020, leading wilderness therapy groups in the Cairngorms. I currently offer therapy and supervision outdoors and provide training in outdoor therapy approaches.

Substance use and working in prisons

Associate counsellor at Simpson House (2019-2021, Edinburgh), working with people experiencing problematic substance use and trauma in both community and prison settings, including at an HMP

Alcohol use

Senior counsellor and supervisor at a specialist service (2022) supporting people with problematic alcohol use.

Voice hearing and dissociative processes

Volunteer with Hearing Voices Network Scotland (Time and Space) since 2017, which has provided training and ongoing support and mentoring, alongside other services, in working with voice hearing and dissociative experiences.

Two ways to work together

Short-term consultation (1-3 sessions)

For when you need focused support on a specific case or situation.

Ongoing skill development (6+ months)

For when you want to develop genuine competence in one of these speciality areas.

This is more like mentorship: we meet regularly so I can support your learning over time. You’ll bring cases, we’ll explore theory and practice, and you’ll build confidence and skill in this area of work.

My approach

I bring an anti-oppressive and anti-diagnostic lens to all these areas of work.

This means we won’t start from “what’s wrong with this client?” but rather “what has happened to them and around them?” and “what sense are they making of their experience?” I value diverse ways of understanding and describing distress, and we’ll also explore how your framework shapes your relationship with your client.

An important aspect of my supervisory practice is to attend to what’s coming up for you in this work: your own processes, triggers, uncertainties, and the edges of your comfort zone.
